Cuba to Host International Chamber Music Festival

Havana - Renown local and foreign representatives of the choral music will meet in the Twelfth Chamber Music Festival meeting, to be held in Cuba from April 18th to 25th, today confirmed the director of the event Frank Fernández.

To show wonders achieved in groups and by little-known young talents will be one of the objectives of the festival the publishing house Colibri will record for a future album.

The award-winning pianist and composer is aware of forgotten that usually is this manifestation of music and therefore values the realization of a festival dedicated to its promotion and development.

According to Fernández, chamber music is one of the most complex expressions because a performer can be a powerful soloist but when going to play within a group, he must submit to accompany the rest and be a powerful companion.

One of the most educational activities and that helps the most to develop the talent of artists is chamber music, told Prensa Latina the father of Cuban piano school.

Fernández and a group of musicians of the prestigious Institute of strings Ravinia, from Chicago, United States, will share skills at the opening of the Twelfth Festival on April 18th at the Basilica Menor del Convento de San Francisco de Asis.

In this concert, Stella Chen and Tessa Lark (violin), Paul Biss and Steven Laraia (viola) and Haran Meltzer (cello) will play Quintet Opus 87 of Felix Mendelssohn, a work that has never been played in Cuba.

During the week of the festival, two or three concerts will take place daily at the Oratorio San Felipe Neri, Cervantes Hall, Paula Church, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Covarrubias Hall of the National Theatre and the Basilica itself.

In addition to students of that institute Ravinia, there will be also students from art schools and Cuban groups like the Chamber Orchestra of Havana, Duo Promúsica, Orchestra Musica Eterna, Cienfuegos Guitar Ensemble and Duo Ondina, among others.

The event will celebrate the anniversaries of the creation of groups like Sonatas Habaneras (20 years) and Ventus Havana quintet (10 years) and also will pay homage to Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Esteban Salas and Carmen Valdes.

Two lectures will prestige to the twelfth edition: A violin lecture, by Puerto Rican Professor Francisco Caban, and one on viola, given by the master from the United States Paul Biss.
