Legendary Buena Vista Social Club to perform at the White House

Legendary Cuban musical group Buena Vista Social Club will play at a White House reception next Thursday in honor of Hispanic heritage month, a US official announced.

Government sources announced that “Buena Vista Social Club is the first Cuba-based band that will perform at the White House for the first time in over 50 years”.

The musical project rescued and joined again during the 1990s great figures of the Cuban music thanks to the impulse of US guitarist Ry Cooder. For two decades, the group—named after a social and musical club in Havana—has performed in countless stages worldwide.

During the reception, President Barack Obama will deliver a speech in honor of the Hispanic Heritage Month—celebrated every year since 1968 from September 15 to this Thursday—and also for the 25th anniversary of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics.

This summer, Cuba and the United States restored diplomatic relations as part of normalization process announced by both presidents in December 17 last year.
