Cuban Fighter vs. Terrorism Thanks Solidarity of Spanish People

Madrid - Cuban fighter against Terrorism, Gerardo Hernandez, ensured that without the global solidarity, including that of the Spanish people, to be free along with four compatriots unjustly imprisoned in the United States would be impossible today.

You not only took us out of the prison, but also helped us to resist for all those years of closure, Hernandez said during an emotional meeting with representatives of many solidarity organizations and Cuban residents in Spain.

We have longtime friends who have never seen because we met them through the letters they sent to us to the jail in support of our cause, the Hero of the Republic of Cuba also said.

He also thanked the support to the relatives of the Cuban Five, as Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Rene Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando Gonzalez were known in the global crusade for their release.

He said their relatives were their main lawyers and managed this case was understood, above all during the early years when the process was unpopular and a propaganda show against the Cuban Revolution was tried to mount.

That was the dream of the enemies of our country and they failed due to our resistance inspired on you, stressed Hernandez before a busy evening at the headquarters of the Havana embassy in Madrid.

You never feared that your names were linked to the five Cuban spies, the Cuban fighter against terrorism remarked, referring to the prosecution presented by the U.S. government against him.

For the faithful come sooner or later, Cuba keeps their love. For those unable to love it and serve it, it´s enough to oblivion, Hernandez said paraphrasing a thought by independence leader, Jose Marti, he held in one of the walls of his cell.

The Five were arrested in Miami in 1998, for monitoring the activities by extremist groups with a huge record of aggression against the Caribbean nation.

Fernando and Rene were released from prison after completing their sentences, while Labañino, Guerrero and Hernandez returned to Havana in December 2014, thanks to an agreement between Cuban and U.S. authorities.

Hernandez, who was banned for two life sentences plus 15 years, responded a question from Prensa Latina stated that they would never tire of expressing gratitude for all the help they received from the groups of solidarity on a global scale.

He confessed that his trip to this European country also had a personal touch with his visit to the Canary Islands, a place where he was born and his mother, Carmen Nordelo Tejera, lived for 15 years, before migrating to the Caribbean nation.
