Cuban Athlete Osleni Guerrero Makes Debut in LA

Washington - Cuban badminton athlete Osleni Guerrero will make today his debut at the second round of the International Manhattan Beach Tournament, in Los Angeles, California, USA.

Guerrero, second place in the Pan American Games in Guadalajara (Mexico) in 2011, will matcfh against Surinamese Soren Opti, and is the first head of series in a competition to extend up to February 7. The winner will get 2,500 points for his position in the world ranking of the discipline.

If he wins in his first appearance, the Cuban athlete will match the winner of the match between Jinn Ye Tan (Malaysia) and Indra Bagus (Italy).

Other competitors, will be the US athlete Howard Shu, second in the organigram, Martin Giuffre (Canada), Edwin Ekiring (Uganda), Bjorn Seguin (US), Rosario Maddaloni (Italy), and Mexicans Lino Muñoz and Job Castillo, among the most ranked.

The Cuban, owner of 25,220 units and located in the 57th place in the world ranking, must take advantage of this opportunity to continue adding points in their aspirations to secure the ticket to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, from August 5 to 21 this year.

I assume the competition with the sights set on the Olympics, and I will play every game as one more experience.

This event has been attended by a few good level badminton players that will try to improve in the rankings to get a quota to the Olympics, said the daily Granma taling about Guerrero.

The Caribbean badminton player pointed out that after the Manhattan Beach he will get ready for the Open of Guatemala, from the 24th to the 28th of February.

Before the closing of the Olympic qualifying process - the first of May - Guerrero intends to participate in the 2nd International Series Tournament of Peru from March 3 to 6; then in Jamaica, and from the 22th to the 27th, he will defend his champion crown of the Giraldilla de La Habana.

Almost I have events scheduled with security, accumulate points that allow me to a good position in the world rankings and go to Rio. Achieving that goal will only me and the good performance obtained in each of those contests, Guerrero told the Cuban newspaper.
