Paris- The French justice investigates today the granting of the Olympic Games in 2016 and 2020 to Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo, respectively.
The French Secretary of State for Sport, Thierry Braillard, said today that they got to this point while making progress in the investigation for corruption on the former president of the The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), Lamine Diack.
The case, led by Judge Renaud van Ruymbeke, was expanded after information revealed by the British newspaper The Guardian about suspected illegal procedures in the awarding of the summer venues.
In an interview with France Info radio, Braillard stressed that this research does not tarnish the action of the current leaders of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
According to The Guardian, Lamine Diack and his son, Pope Massata Diack, served as intermediaries among the candidate cities to host the Olympic Games and some IOC members.
