Havana, Cuba - US President Barack Obam will attend an exhibition baseball game, March 22, between MLB Tampa Bay Rays and a Cuban selection at Havana´s Latinoamericano stadium.

Ben Rhodes, National Security Advisor for Obama wrote on his Twitter account that @POTUS (Obama) will attend the exhibition game between @RaysBaseball and a Cuban team in Cuba.

The White House advisor said that they are very happy to strengthen links between the two countries through the passion of baseball.

President Obama will attend the match as part of his official visit to Cuba March 21 and 22, the first visit by a US president in over eight decades and following the reestablishment of bilateral diplomatic relations on July 20, 2015.

The visit by the Tampa Bay Rays will be the second by a MLB team to Cuba since 1999, when the Baltimore Orioles faced a national team at the Latinoamericano stadium.

The match was announced on Tuesday by the Cuban Baseball Federation as saying that the two teams will share a friendly meet at the Havana stadium.

On the road to normal bilateral relations, Cuba and the United States have key pending issues to tackle, such as the lifting of the over-50-year US economic, commercial and financial blockade of the island nation, the return to Cuba of the illegally occupied Cuban territory of Guantanamo, where Washington maintains a naval base and the end of subservice TV and radio transmissions to the island.
