Havana - The Cuban National Ballet today celebrates International Dance Day with a performance of Swan Lake at the Alicia Alonso Gran Teatro in Havana.

The Federico Garcia Lorca hall of this eclectic style building will host the performance in which the young dancer, Rafael Quenedit, will debut in the role of Prince Siegfried, while prima ballerina, Gretel Morejon, will play princess Odette and the evil Odile.

The creator of the double character in Cuba was the Prima Ballerina Assoluta, Alicia Alonso, while she was a ballet student, after performing her own choreography on the original dance by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov.

International Dance Day will also remember the birthday of French dancer and teacher, Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), who is known internationally as the creator of modern ballet.

Established by UNESCO in 1982, the event aims to promote the diversity of dance in every part of the world, regardless of cultural, political or ethnic barriers.

Every April 29th, schools devoted time to teaching dance and thousands of companies worldwide hold classes, outdoor performances, lectures, exhibitions and street performances.
