Cuban Foreign Minister pays official visit to Germany

Havana, Cuba - Cuban foreign minister Bruno Rodriguez is paying an official visit to Germany on Monday, aimed at deepening bilateral relations in different sectors.

Rodriguez traveled to Germany on the invitation of that country's foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who visited Cuba last July in what was described as the first trip by a top German diplomatic official to the island.

The Cuban foreign minister is scheduled to hold official talks with his German counterpart and meet a varied working agenda, which includes meetings with local authorities, according to the Cuban Foreign Ministry.

Cuba-Germany relations have large potential to keep developing particularly when the European country is the main source of tourists to the Caribbean destination.

Germany and Cuba signed on July 2015 a political consultation accord and reestablished cooperation relations with the setting up of a joint declaration on collaboration.

The two countries established diplomatic relations on July 22, 1953, which were cut during ten years after that event. Bilateral links were reestablished in January 1975. Germany has traditionally backed Cuba against the over-50-year US economic, commercial and financial blockade.

Germany baked the process aimed at reaching a bilateral accord for a political and cooperation dialog between the European Union and Cuba. The High European Union representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini recently said that she would ask the European Council to put down the so-called European Union Common Position on Cuba, promoted in 1996 by then Spanish government chief Jose Maria Aznar.

Cuba and Germany share historic cultural bonds that go back to the times of German philosopher Alexander von Humboldt, who is regarded to as the second discoverer of Cuba in the areas of environment: geography, wildlife, flora, topography, climate and soils.
