Moscow - The Cuban antiterrorist fighter Antonio Guerrero highlighted here today the validity of the cause of the Five who served long prison sentences in the United States for fighting terrorism, sponsored from the US territory.
It was our turn - declared the Hero of the Republic of Cuba during a press conference with the local media together with Gerardo Hernández, René González, Ramón Labañino and Fernando González- to face this great injustice when we conducted monitoring activities on groups planning terrorist actions against Cuba, inside the United States.
Guerrero told Russian journalists interested in the case that the trial held in Miami and the entire process against the Cuban Five, as they are known worldwide, confirmed the double standards of the US policy in the fight against this scourge, despite its campaign and the deployment of troops around the world to supposedly combat the terrorist threat.
He added that Cuba gave documents with information on the activities of counterrevolutionary groups (trained by the CIA) and the government's reaction was to arrest the Five. In his view, this element represents one of the weaknesses this case had and it should be considered by the world, given the current situation.
The five heroes thanked the support of different sectors of the Russian population, in particular the actions taken by the State Duma (Lower house) with numerous parliamentarian resolutions and appeals to the international community for their liberation.
Guerrero mentioned some social organizations such as the Venceremos Movement, whose activists held demonstrations outside the US embassy in Moscow once a month for several years.
It was also highlighted the intense work of the Russian Committee pro-Liberation of the Five headed by Lena Lozhkina, who added friends across the geography of the Russian Federation to contribute to the release of Gerardo, René, Antonio, Fernando and Ramón.
Three of them returned to their homeland on December 17, 2014, after being imprisoned since 1998. Previously, René had returned in March 2013 and Fernando in February 2014, after serving completely their unjust sentences.
