Famous Hotel Chains Point to Cuba

Havana - Significant foreign hotel chains point to Cuba, where tourism is increasing rapidly as it is shown in official reports and news media.
The Ministry of Tourism of Cuba (Mintur) recently celebrated the interest of firms like Melia Hotels International or Iberostar of Spain, already with a long standing relation with this country, to which are added now a numerous group of other foreign lodging companies.
A report published in the Italian newspaper Travel Trade Caribbean TTC, circulating in the 36th International Tourism Fair FIT Cuba 2016 (May 3-7) shows data given by Mintur.
The sources show that tourism is one of the economic sectors prioritized in Cuba and the second source of hard currency after the export of services.
Protected by 76 contracts, a total of 17 foreign hotel chains operate in this archipelago with 83 establishments, of which 98 percent are four and five-star categories.
Those enterprises managed at the closing of the first quarter, 39 thousand 422 rooms, added to the creation of 13 joint venture in this sector.
On top of the list is Melia, with 28 hotels in management and 13 thousand 480 rooms.
Follows the Canadian firm Blue Diamond Hotels and Resorts, belonging to the Sunwing Travel Group, with 15 hotels and eight thousand 472 rooms while the rest of operators come from France, Portugal, Jamaica and the United States. The U.S. firm Starwood signed a bilateral agreement with Cuba, a first for both nations since 1959.
Starwood incorporates Hotel Inglaterra (the oldest of the island, owned by Gran Caribe) to its Brand The Luxury Collection and the Quinta Avenida Habana property of Gaviota a Four Point By Sheraton.
Thirty-nine percent of the hotels managed by those foreign companies arte in the Varadero beach resort, distant some 140 kilometers east of the capital, main destination of sun and beach in this archipelago.
Other hotels with foreign administration are in the Jardines del Rey (King´s Gardens) at the cays Coco and Guillermo (center-north coast) with 14 percent of foreign management and the keys of Villa Clara and Havana, with 13 percent each one.
The list of administrating chains also includes Iberostar Hotels and Resorts, H10 Hotels, Blau Hotels and Resorts, Warwick International Hotels and Resorts, Accor, Valentin, BlueBay, Barcelo, Be Live, Roc, Pestana y and SuperClubs.
