US Mayors Advocate Better Relations with Cuba

Havana - The United States and Cuba have many things in common despite their differences, but they cannot stop the process of talks, said here the members of a delegation from the U.S. Conference of Mayors, which is on its third visit day.

During a meeting held on Thursday at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba with Cuban and international journalists, the American visitors stated that there has been progress in bilateral negotiations, in line with the process of restoring relations between the two nations, broken more than 50 years ago.

Baltimore Mayor and U.S. Conference of Mayors President, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, stressed that they were trying to remove the obstacles to eliminating the economic, commercial and financial blockade unilaterally imposed on Cuba for more than 50 years.

The Baltimore mayor emphasized that a good conversation with the Cuban side had been started and that he hoped that they would continue the talks in the United States. He invited Cuban Mayors to come to the USA to 'seek new ways to work together'.

Meanwhile, New Orleans Mayor and Second Vice President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Mitchell Landrieu, stated that this delegation represents a very large organization that has not yet taken a stance regarding the blockade on Cuba.

U.S. Conference of Mayors CEO and Executive Director, Tom Cochran, acknowledged that the group has a long history of relations with Cuba, and confirmed that they will meet in Indianapolis on June 24 and 'is likely that the Cuba issue would be included in the agenda'.

The delegation of U.S. mayors, who have been on the island since May 25, have held meetings with officials, scientists, artists and other representatives of the Cuban society.
