Key West and Havana Linked Again by New Rally

A fleet of 13 motor yachts and a sailing ship arrived in Cuban waters on Monday from Key West, which will contribute to strengthen even more the nautical bonds revived after the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States.

It is expected that the visitors, on June 22, at 11 a.m., together with local boats, will carry out exhibitions along the capital's seafront, the Hemingway International Yacht Club informed.

The rally, organized by the Yacht Club of Key West, will also promote the signing of a friendship agreement between this association and the Cuban Aviation Club and the Hemingway International Yacht Club in order to strengthen existing ties of cooperation.

According to the press release, the signing will be preceded by the arrival at Havana’s Jose Marti International Airport of a rally of three aircraft from the Air Yacht Club section of Key West.

Likewise, it was known that a fleet of eight yachts and the same number of sailing boats will get to the capital’s waters on June 24, as part of a rally to Cuba by the Association of Cruiser Yachtsmen of Texas.

That U.S. fleet, accompanied by members of Hemingway International Yacht Club, will concentrate on June 26 at 11 a.m. in front of the Morro Castle, in what has been described as an unprecedented event.

Another of the 18 competitions scheduled for 2016 with the U.S. boating community will be the Havana World Record Challenge, in which James Dennoyer, a member of Yacht Club of Key West, will try to set a speed record of less than one hour between Key West and Havana.

The competitor, together with his son Thomas DeNooyer, will sail on a boat specially designed for this journey, capable of a speed of over 100 miles per hour.

In August, 2015, German Roger Klüh crossed in one hour and 30 minutes the 145 kilometers separating the two territories, on board of his Apache Star boat.
