London - British Prime Minister, David Cameron, resigned on Friday after the United Kingdom voted in a referendum to exit the European Union (EU).

Cameron explained he will continue exercising his role for three months, until his successor would be elected at the congress held by the Conservative Party in October.

'The country needs new leadership. It's not a decision I have made lightly', said the Prime Minister's official statement.

Cameron argued that he does not consider himself to be 'the captain to pilot this ship to its next destination', which is a blow to his management and political credibility.

The 49-year-old politician also announced that he will not apply the Article 50 of the Treaty of Lisbon, which governs the exit of a Member State of the EU, since he considers it to be the task of whoever takes his place in October.
