At Least 28 Killed in Bangladesh Hostage Siege

Dacca - At least 28 persons were killed,20 of them hostages, after a terrorists attack carried out in a restaurant in this capital,were they made a stand off for 11 hours, according to sources from the Bangladesh army.

"We recovered the bodies of 20 persons that were hacked to death",explained brigadier Nayeem Ashfaq Chowdhury during a press conference.

13 hostages among them a Japanese and two from Sri Lanka, were rescued after the security forces stormed the place at 07:40 local time on Saturday.

In 12 minutes our units were able to neutralize the seven terrorists,six of who died during the combat and another was captured.

Survivors claimed the killers cut down those who were unable to recite passages from the Koran, others were tortured until they died one of the hostages Rezaul Karim told the Daily Star.

Two policmen were killed during the gun fight against the terrorists .

Bangladesh, with a population of 160 millon, suffers a wave of violence carried out by islamists groups against homosexuals,foreingners,and members of religious minorities which has caused more than 30 dead in almost 2 years.
