Mexico - Teachers belonging to the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE, in Spanish) today continue their protests in Mexico against the government''s education reform, despite the promise of talks between the teachers'' movement and the government.

The CNTE reported that there will be no academic activities in Mexico City's schools today.

The Ministry of Public Education (SEP, in Spanish) minimized the strike by stating that of the 4,200 schools in the capital, only 114 adhered to the strike called by the CNTE yesterday.

It was reiterated that lessons in Mexico City will continue as normal, this school year, until July 15th.

In Juchitan, in the state of Oaxaca, roadblocks have been in place for more than 20 days, manned by teachers of Section 22 of the CNTE with the support of parents and social organizations demanding a repeal of the education reform bill.

Yesterday, the demonstrators protested the lack of official response to the conflict and demanded the release of union leaders and punishment for the events that took place on June 19th in Nochixtlán in Oaxaca, where at least eight people died.

The state coordinator of education workers in Guerrero said that today the teachers would completely block state highways.

A few days ago the teachers opposing the reform announced that on Thursday and Friday they would take part in several demonstrations at federal organizations around the country.

Next Monday a meeting will be held between members of the CNTE and the Interior Ministry, seeking to resolve the conflict regarding the reform that teachers describe as punitive.
