Madrid - Spain today increased the surveillance in its tourist areas, airports and borders with France, following the attack on Thursday in Nice, which caused 84 deaths and over a hundred of people injured.
After the masscre in the French city, the interim government of Mariano Rajoy decided to strengthen the level four of the anti-terrorist alert, with an increased protection in hotels, airports, places of great influx of people and summer resorts.
This intensification of security measures against possible terrorist attacks will remain active until the authorities in Madrid and Paris consider it appropriate.
All Spanish intelligence services unanimously agreed the need to maintain the level four alert, since there were no indications of a forthcoming attack in this nation, said yesterday the interim Interior Minister Jorge Fernández.
Nevertheless, and according to the French authorities, the reinforcement being carried out in the bordering areas on the occasion of the European Football Championship, which should end on the 26th, will continue for the time being.
Since June 2015, after the attacks in France, Tunisia and Kuwait, the level of anti-terrorist alert in Spain remains in the four (high risk), a category that remained after the jihadist attacks of November in Paris and this year in Brussels.
The level five (the maximum) is activated if the information and intelligence services detect the imminence of an attack against this European nation, and involves the deployment of armed forces in the streets.
Madrid was victim of the deadliest jihadist attack in Europe on March 11, 2004, when several bombs exploded on trains causing 191 deaths.
