National Assembly Discusses Extension of Emergency State in France

Paris -The National Assembly in France today began discussions on again lengthening the state of emergency after the attack in Nice that killed 84 people.

According to government and parliamentarian sources cited by the local press, deputies and senators could extend the state of emergency beyond the three months expected, until early 2017.

It seems that legislators will approve the extension of the state of emergency, although there are concerns about its duration.

The measure is a reaction to the attack in Nice on July 14th, when a man drove a truck into the crowd on the Promenade des Anglais, during the traditional celebration of the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille.

Identified as Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, a Tunisian of 31 years, the attacker killed 84 people and injured around 300.

Although the Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack and indicated that the individual was one of its soldiers, ongoing investigations do not point to the existence of a specific relationship between Lahouaiej Bouhlel and that terrorist organization, according to the Paris prosecutor, François Molins.

The state of emergency has been in force in France since November 14th, 2015,one day after the attacks in Paris that killed 130 people and after three extensions was expected to end on July 26th.
