Russian Olympic Committee President Sees Off Delegation to Rio

Moscow - Alexander Zhukov, president of the Russian Olympic Committee, today saw off a representation of athletes for the Rio-2016 Games, at the Sheremetevo international airport.

About 270 athletes in almost 30 disciplines will represent the Eurasian country in the Olympics. The first group of 70 athletes departed today to Rio de Janeiro.

During the farewell ceremony at the Moscow airport, Zhukov expressed confidence in victory and asked the athletes not to yield to possible provocations, Russian state TV channel 'Rossiya 24' reported.

The president of the national committee told the press that the international federations have so far validated about 270 Russian representatives to the Rio de Janeiro games, to be run on August 5th and 21st.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) did not invalidate the entire Russian delegation to the Games, but moved the final decision to the respective global federations.

Track and field, rowing and swimming athletes are been banned from competing at Rio-2016.

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) separately declined to review the participation of track and field athletes Yelena Ysinbaeva, Maria Kuchina and Serguei Shubenkov.
