Caracas.- With a community parade and colorful commemoration ceremony, Cubans and Venezuelans celebrated the 12 anniversary of socialist mission Barrio Adentro Deportivo, created by Comandante Hugo Chávez in 2004.
During the cultural-political ceremony, dedicated to the leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro’s 90th birthday, and what would have be Chávez’s 62nd as well as the 63rd anniversary of the assaults on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Garrisons, Venezuela’s Minister of Youth and Sport, Mervin Maldonado, described the excellent efforts of both peoples to guarantee sport as a social right.
Participating in the act was Pedro Infante, International School of Physical Education graduate and current president of the National Sports Institute, recalled the revolutionary character of the socialist mission, present in all neighborhoods and municipalities across the country, and serves over six million Venezuelans of all ages, including professional athletes.
Also present were Deputy Darío Vivas, United Socialist Party of Venezuela leader, who highlighted the importance of 12 years of Barrio Adentro Deportivo to the country: “to ennobling our people and improving their quality of life.”
The event was enlivened by cultural presentations by Cuban and Venezuelan artists, presided over by Gladys Requena, minister of Women’s Issues, recognized the impact on the local community of work by outstanding collaborators.
Moe than 3,000 Cuban physical education, sports and recreation specialists are currently offering their services through the socialist mission, which over the last 12 years has contributed to training Venezuelan personnel responsible for continuing to promote and improve sports in communities, while also raising results in highly competitive disciplines.
