Dos Santos Re-elected as President of the Ruling MPLA in Angola

Luanda - The ruling Angola Popular Liberation Movement (MPLA), which today closes its VII Ordinary Congress, reelected Jose Eduardo dos Santos as president of the largest political organization of this nation.

Out of a total of 2,553 delegates, representing the activists of the 18 provinces of the country cast their vote, five were against and five abstained for 99.6 percent.

The delegates also elected the 363 members of the Central Committee of the MPLA, with 2, 509 ballots.

Only candidate for president of the Party, founded on December 10, 1956, Dos Santos replaced Agostinho Neto on September 20, 1979 after the death of the first president of Angola (1922-1979).

According to public reviews of his political career, Dos Santos, who was born in Luanda on August 28, 1942 and belongs to the mbundu ethnic group, the second largest in the country, joined, in his 18, the youth branch of the MPLA in 1961.

Two years later he received a scholarship to study engineering in the former Soviet Union, where he received his degree in Petrochemical specialty.

A year after Angola's independence was proclaimed on November 11, 1975, Dos Santos is appointed Foreign Affairs Minister of the young nation.

With Neto's death in 1979 was appointed by his political organization as president until 1992, when the opposition National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (Unita) and the MPLA agreed to turn the country into multiparty State and run for elections.

Enacted in 2010, the Angolan Constitution definitively abolished the presidential election and replaced it by generals. The head of the list of the of the most voted party is automatically the president of the Republic and the second the Vice President.

In August 31, 2012 elections, the MPLA won 71.84 percent of the vote. Dos Santos and Manuel Domingos Vicente were president and vice president, respectively.

With his re-election as leader of the MPLA, Dos Santos will be the applicant of his political force to the 2017 general elections.
