Cuban Olympians return home

This Tuesday, August 23, the last contingent of the Cuban delegation to the Río 2016 Olympic Games touched down in Havana.

The athletes, led by the five gold medalists: three-times Greco-Roman wrestling Champion, Mijaín López, fellow wrestler Ismael Borrero and boxers Julio César la Cruz, Robeisy Ramírez and Arlen López, received a warm welcome on their arrival.

Arlen López, gold medalist in the 75kg boxing division, spoke on behalf of the delegation, noting that they were returning with their heads held high, as they had demonstrated dedication and sacrifice at every stage of the Games.

Meanwhile, Young Communist League Second National Secretary, Ronald Hidalgo Rivera, praised the performances in boxing and wrestling, the combativeness of the Cuban beach volleyball team and the courage of gymnast Manrique Larduet and decathlete Leonel Suarez, who both competed despite injuries.

As part of the welcoming reception, the Federation of Cuban Women awarded a special recognition to all women athletes, as part of the 56th anniversary of the institution.

Also present were Olga Lidia Tapia Iglesias, member of the Communist Party Central Committee Secretariat, José Ramón Fernández, president of the Cuban Olympic Committee, and Antonio Becali, president of INDER, who arrived at the head of the delegation.
