Brazilian Federal Senate Faced with Final Sentence to Dilma Rousseff

Brasilia - The Brazilian Federal Senate will undertake its final decision today, starting at 11:00, local time, as a consequence of which the constitutional president could lose her post and be politically disqualified for eight years.

Federal Supreme Court (STF) President, Ricardo Lewandowski, who is leading this stage of the impeachment process, because the stage of discussion started yesterday should last until around 03:00, local time, today, adopted the decision last night.

The sixth and last day of the trial against Rousseff, accused of committing a supposed responsibility offense, will begin with a reading by Lewandowski of the document with the elements contributed by the sides, the statements by two senators in favor and two against of Dilma's disqualification and finally, the vote.

When casting the electronic nominal vote, each senatorial member will only have to answer yes or no to the question if he/she considers that the president broke the Fiscal Responsibility Law.

For Dilma Rousseff's term of office to be interrupted, support by the qualified majority of the senatorial plenary (54 votes) will be necessary. In such case, the acting president, in office since May 12, Michel Temer, will remain in that post until January 1, 2019.

If on the contrary, more than 27 senators voted for reinstating Dilma in her post, she would assume as head of State, after the verdict of not guilty is made public.

Dilma Rousseff assumed her own defense on Monday before the Senate and insisted on her innocence and the absolute fragility of the accusations on which the impeachment process is based.
