FIFA President Open to World Cups with 40 Teams

Bern - President of the Federation International of Football Associatiohns (FIFA), Gianni Infantino, expressed he is open to the possibility of having a world cup competition with 40 national selections and several hosting countries in 2026.

All is open. My opinion on the 40 teams has not changed, said Infantino, who in his stay at the European Association (UEFA) supervised the expansion of the Eurocup from the previous 16 to 24 teams.

In his opinion, the edition of France-2016 showed that with eight more teams, the enthusiasm sprung up in many countries.

We should understand this class of world events are more than a competition, they are real social events worldwide, he explained.

Infantiuo also left doors open to possible future joint candidatures for World Cups.

These two topics will surely be on the table of discussion when the FIFA Council meets on October 13 and 14 in Zurich, assured the executive.
