Cuban Chess Player Dominguez Wins Silver as First Table Player

Baku - Cuban chess player Leinier Dominguez won the silver medal for first table players in the World Olympiad celebrated in this capital, ended Tuesday after playing 11 rounds.

Dominguez, a chess player with 2,720 ELO points, defeated Constantin Lupulescu in the tie at two points against the Romanian team, and reached 7.5 points of 10 possible, playing for a performance rating of 2,839 points, behind Georgian Baduur Jobava (2,926 ELO, 8 of 10 possible points) who won the gold medal as a first table player.

US Fabiano Caruana (2,838 ELO, 7 of 10 possible points) won the bronze nedal as a first table representative.

To win this silver medal, the Cuban player achieved five victories and equal quantity of point divisions, and a profit of 15,6 points that will be added to his ELO on October 1st, when he will have the chance to ascend several steps in the world ranking.

This is the second medal by a Cuban player as a first table player in an Olympiad, after the gold by José Raúl Capablanca in the version of Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1939.

In a general way this silver medal is the fourth laurel for a Cuban, after which Reynaldo Vera won the bronze as a the third table representative of Elista in 1998 and Isán Ortiz as a fourth table player in Tromso-2014.

Today in addition to the success of Domínguez before Lupulescu, Cuban Yuniesky Quesada (2, 636) and Isan Ortiz (2, 581) tied against Mircea-Emilian Parligras and Bogdan-Daniel Deac, respectively, and Yuri González (2, 553) lost his match against Mihail Marin.

In total, Cuba accumulated 14 points after six winning matches, two ties, and three lost matches, and totalized 27,5 as balance of the individual resultss, valid for the 25th place in the World Olympiad.

The United States defeated Canada 2,5-1,5 to take the first place for teams with 20 units, a crown it did win since Haifa-1976. Ukraine (20 points and worse tiebreak) finished second, and Russia (18) closed as third.

In the feminine sector, Cuba conquered the match against Croatia 3-1, and raised up to the 18th position of the classification, with 15 victorties, and seven series in its favor, a tie and three defeats.

Maritza Arribas (2,315) and Lisandra Llaudy (2,269) contributed to the victories of the farewell before Valentina Golubenko and Patricia Vujnovic, in this order, while Yaniet Marrero (2, 281) and Oeliny Linares (2, 276) were signing divisions against Borka Franciskovic and Kristina Saric.

China reconquered a scepter not exhibited since Calvía-2004, thanks to a sweeping step of nine winning matches and two ties that left the Chinese team with 20 points. Poland was second with 17 and a better tiebreak than Ukraine, which placed third.
