Seismologists Monitor Telluric Situation in Southeastern Cuba

Santiago de Cuba, Oct 1 (Prensa Latina) Experts from the National Seismic Service (SSN) are carefully observing on Saturday the telluric situation in the southeastern region of Imias, a municipality in eastern Guantanamo province, where three perceptible earthquakes were recorded, followed by aftershocks.

The first 4.8-magnitude event was reported on Friday at 19:06 hours, local time, about 30 kilometers from that town and five kilometers deep. It was perceptible in that region and in the municipalities of Palma Soriano, San Luis and Santiago de Cuba.

Two other 2.8- and 3.7-magnitude earthquakes followed that tremor a few minutes later. The latter was also felt in this municipality and in Guantanamo province.

According to the daily seismic report from the SSN, which is attached to the National Seismic Research Center (CENAIS), more than 80 aftershocks have been reported along Cuba's southeast coast.

Although the tremors caused no human or material damages, experts, authorities and people are still interested in them.
