Cuban Players Present in Foreign Leagues

Left-handed Wilber Pérez won the Italian Baseball League with the Paternó Red Sox ASD, and was also proclaimed MVP of the season.

Perez, 39, came from the bullpen in the fourth inning to work until out 27 and earned the 5-0 win of his team over the Bolate, defending champion, Jit reported over te weekend.

The lefty, who plays for the Isla de la Juventud Pirates in Cuba, reached the finals after achieving the feat of pitching three No-No games in the Italian tournament.

His three victims were the Bologna Athletics, last June, a performance that included 14 strikeouts; the IS Copy Junior Alpino, on July 10, with the same number of strikeouts in only seven innings, and the most recent was in August 28 over the Jolly Roger BC, which he won 9-0 with 18 strikeouts, that last feat was already in the playoffs of the League.

Wilber said via Facebook that he owes all he achieved there to his family, friends, the Pirates team and all his coaches, while announcing that he will be back in Cuba on October 10th.

With this superb performance, Perez joins another two Cuban players proclaimed monarchs in foreign leagues this year: Pinar del Rio´s infielder Donald Duarte and Industriales´ first baseman Alexander Malleta, both with the Ottawa Champions in the Canadian-American (Can-Am) League.
