UNESCO Warns of Global Need for Teachers

Paris - Some 69 million new teachers will be needed to cover the primary and secondary education in the world until 2030, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) said today.

After celebrating today the World Teachers' Day, the Paris-based organization emphasized the importance of training the new generations to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

'Teachers not only contribute to shaping the individual future of millions of children; but also they help building a better world for everyone,' said a joint message from the teachers of several UN organizations such as UNESCO, UNDP, UNICEF, among others.

After noting the shortage of teachers, the UNESCO explained that in the coming 14 years, about 24.4 million primary teachers and 44.4 million secondary teachers will be needed, according to data from the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS).

As part of the activities for the World Teachers' Day, the organization has planned to deliver the UNESCO-Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Prize for performance and exemplary results in improving the effectiveness of teachers.
