Veteran Criticizes Government Attitude regarding the Malvinas

Buenos Aires -The Argentinean veteran journalist and writer Edgardo Esteban considered here that the Government today has a light position on the issue of the Malvinas Islands, occupied by the UK almost two centuries ago.

I think there is a lot of improvisation regarding something that belongs to us, which marks us as part of our history and identity, declared to Prensa Latina the author of Enlightened by Fire.
The also Telesur correspondent made reference to the agreement signed on September 14th between Argentina and the UK Foreign Ministries on issues such as fishing and exploitation of hydrocarbons in the Malvinas.

The deal was rejected immediately by the Malvinas Veterans Center, which even presented in recent days a complaint against Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra and Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Foradori for what they consider 'a breach of duties of public officials'.

That agreement, he pointed out, gives certain facilities and advantages for the exploitation of our natural resources. What you perceive is that this goes back to the 90's when the government of Carlos Menem signed a similar agreement.

On Friday, it was announced that this week the British government would initiate military exercises in the islands, including missile launching. The decision was also criticized by several political and social sectors.

Esteban, winner of the Azucena Villaflor Prize for his struggle in defense of human rights in the Malvinas cause, highlighted the fact that this place is the location of the base Mount Pleasant, the largest military structure of NATO in the southern hemisphere.

They have a maritime control of all that is the southern sea. What the UK wants today is to exercise the future control of natural resources in Antarctica, they have been working on that, he warned.

The journalist stressed that this situation hurts because it seems that part of our history, in this context, does not have any consideration.
