New Referendum Would Ruin Havana Peace Agreements, Samper Says

Quito - The secretary general of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), Ernesto Samper, said on Friday that another referendum would ruin the progress achieved in Havana in the peace negotiations between the government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People''s Army (FARC-EP).

'The Havana adjusted agreements are fully in force to be implemented. Submitting them to a new referendum would ruin them,' said the head of UNASUR, based in this capital, on his Twitter account.

Samper expressed his opinion amid a situation in which the two parties are again discussing in Cuba the agreements signed, after the victory of the ´NO' vote in a referendum to endorse the content of the pact.

According to local media, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos instructed the government's representatives to work uninterruptedly in the dialogues with the FARC-EP to solve the peace process between the two sides as soon as possible.

According to the statesman, reaching consensus in a short term is essential given that the agreed ceasefire is fragile.

While this happens in Havana, the beginning of the negotiation table between the Colombian government and the National Liberation Army (ELN), which also seeks to end the armed conflict of more than 50 years definitely, was postponed in Quito.

The beginning of those talks was agreed upon on October 27, but it was temporarily suspended until the ELN releases former congressman Odin Sanchez, the president publicly announced.
