
Cuban botanists and specialists from the International Association for the Preservation of Nature announced the Red list about the flora of Cuba, after a study which analyzed the 67 % of the related species in the nation.
According to Prensa Latina news agency, the 31% of the angiosperms are endangered species and on the brink of extinction, as well as the 54.5% of related species and plants and the 78.5% of the gymnosperms out of the 4627 plants studied.
It was also conducted by the Cuban Botanic Society and the study which worried the scientific community nationwide due to the 18 % of the local flora is in a critical danger of extinction and there are 25 species which are declared extinct already.
The provinces with a higher number of threatened species are Pinar del Río, Holguín, Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo in spite of the notable increase of the actions carried out for the preservation of the Cuban species and ecosystems during the last years.
