Fidel and Baseball as the Endless Game

As for the Commander Fidel Castro, there will never be the final out number 27. Fidel used to loved sports since his childhood, including chess, basketball and swimming, however, he had an intense preference for baseball.

With that passion for our national sport, the leader of the Cuban Revolution created a dream that means the beginning of the National Baseball Series in the 60 decade.

Fidel Castro achieved to consolidate the foundations of the Cuban Revolutionary baseball when it was then thought that Baseball was not going to captivate the local baseball lovers of the Cuban Professional Baseball League, each October.

Nevertheless, on January 14 th, 1962 and before the people that gathered at the Latin American Stadium. The inauguration of the First National Baseball Series was the answer to what many people did not think that Fidel and the Cuban Revolution would achieve.

That romantic baseball from the 1960 decade, shown on the glorious pages of the then 56 editions of the national classic baseball series, will never be forgotten not only due to their clarity and value of those first journalists who promoted the local baseball but also due to its meaning for Cuba as the main key of its idiosyncrasy.

Each baseball feat was special again and again, even since that golden hit achieved by Gaspar, locally named as ´ el Curro Pérez´ in Quisqueya in 1969, until the hits achieved by Frederich Cepeda at the Caribbean Baseball Series in 2015 which made really happy all the people.

Those baseball players such as Manuel Alarcón, locally known as ´Changa Mederos, ´ Pedro Chávez, Miguel Cuevas and Omar Linares, just to mention some of them, are the real proof that this sport has been much more than a game or a passion. A home run means much more than a simple homer in Cuba.

It is true that the baseball is not experiencing its best period at present, but those earlier victories made us being respected, and the great competitors should not be forgotten.

We were able to win three Olympic Games (1992, 1996 and 2004) before baseball powers like the United States and Japan and we have competed bravely, even at a higher baseball level.

That legacy includes Fidel Castro´s leadership, so it is a fact that wherever a local pitcher through a ball, a hitter was struck out or achieve a homer, Fidel will be there like a homer in our hearts. He will be inside our eternal baseball game due to the final out number 27 will never exist for him.
