Brussels - Economic ties with Europe will continue being a priority for Cuba in the construction of an efficient and sustainable socialist economy, according to Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodriguez.

In his speech during the signing of the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement between Havana and the European Union (EU) today, the foreign minister said that the agreement would contribute to enriching their intense historical and cultural relationship and further develop political, cultural, commercial, financial, scientific, academic and sports ties.

Rodriguez recalled that the Latin America and the Caribbean were designated as a Peace Zone, during a meeting of regional heads of State and Government in Havana in 2014, when they pledged, 'to treat others as we want to be treated.'

The pledge, 'Has been the basis for achieving a civilized and profitable coexistence among nations, regardless of their dimensions, sociopolitical models and development levels,' he added.

Rodriguez also recalled the words of the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, when in 2003 he said, 'When the European Union was established, we applauded it because it was the only intelligent and useful thing they could do as a counterweight to the hegemonism of its powerful military and economic competitor ally (The United States).'

The foreign minister also recalled the words of Cuban President Raul Castro, who said that Cuba was open to the construction of a new stage of relations between the EU and Cuba, on the basis of respect and reciprocity.
