Caracas -The governor of the state of Táchira, Jose Vielma, has reported that in this area of Venezuela, 82 money traffickers were detained during the three days allowed to demonetize the 100 bills of the national currency.
'We confiscated 138 million bolivars in 100 notes on the border with Colombia,' the politician said. He went on to explain that the detainees are 'subject to an investigation processes to determine their responsibilities'.
Vielma highlighted the success of security and surveillance operations, which with the support of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces and police, remain at the border.
'What is important is awareness in confronting criminal gangs, smuggling and money laundering that threaten the Venezuelan economy,' he commented in an interview with the multi-state television network TeleSur.
President Nicolás Maduro signed a new State Decree of Exception and Economic Emergency State last Sunday, which put in place the demonetization of the 100 bolivars bill, after detecting the extraction of large quantities from the territory, with the view of attacking the Venezuelan economy and financing international crimes.
Less than 24 hours after the announcement, 64 million bolivars were seized in 100 bolivars notes on the Colombian-Venezuelan border, according to reports by the head of state, on Monday, during a special appearance before the VTV cameras.
At the same time, the president announced the closure of the border crossing, as a measure in defense of the Venezuelan economy because it is estimated that outside of Venezuelan territory there were at least 300 billion bolivars, managed mainly by speculators settled in Colombia.
On Thursday, in another public presentation, the president announced that the borders with Colombia and Brazil would remain closed until next Sunday, December 18th.
