Cholera in another Angolan Province, Capital Intends to Shield Itself

Luanda - Cholera has arrived in the coastal town of Cubal in the central Angolan province of Benguela, while health authorities in this capital today are trying to shield the city to avoid the disease.

Without accurate reports of infection or death, Governor Benguela, Isaac Maria dos Anjos, said he would provide aid to the territory to eliminate the outbreak as soon as possible.

In contact with the citizens, dos Anjos called for extreme hygiene measures to avoid an epidemic such as that of Soyo, in the northern province of Zaire, which already left six dead and more than 100 patients.

Luanda, for its part, will create a meeting on Tuesday a shock plan to respond quickly to a possible outbreak.

During the appointment, at the Technical School of Health, will be formed rapid response teams in the province and municipalities, will locate the treatment centers and laboratories for sampling.

Without cholera records since 2013, health authorities are worried about the presence of the disease in Zaire and now in Benguela.

Caused by the microorganism Vibrio cholerae, the disease is considered a poor country since there are associated conditions of lack of potable water and adequate evacuation of the sewage.

Angola, with a weak health system, had to face last year a yellow fever epidemic that left 381 dead and spread to 16 of its 18 provinces. Its outbreak in an urban area also put the World Health Organization in a tightened state given the shortage of vaccines.
