Attack on Mosque in Canada Encourages Refugee Issue

Ottawa - An attack on a mosque in the Canadian city of Quebec killed six people and wounded eight others, local media reported today, while encouraging controversy over refugees among traditional host countries, including France and Germany.

According to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whose thoughts, he said, are with the families of the victims, this represents a terrorist attack against the Muslims.

By its part, the president of France, Francois Hollande, condemned today in Paris the Quebec attack as an 'odious' act.

In a statement, the president considered that the event -that took place in a mosque - was an attempt to attack the spirit of peace and openness of that city.

The dead people were between 35 and 70 years old, local police spokesman Christine Coulombe confirmed, and two suspects were detained and a third one is on the run.

Canada pledged to welcome the refugees after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday prohibiting the entry of this kind of people into that country four months.

Rejected inside and outside North American territory, the provision of the Republican head of state also prevents the granting of visas for 90 days to citizens of Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.

From German Chancellor Angela Merkel's point of view, the temporary veto imposed by Trump, to the entry into the country of citizens of several Muslim-majority nations is not justified.

Merkel 'is convinced that the determined war against terrorism does not justify putting people under general suspicion based on a particular provenance or religion,' said German Cabinet spokesman Steffen Seibert.

According to official sources, Canada will temporarily offer residence permits to stranded people in the country as a result of Trump's decree.
