Cuba Opens the World Boxing Series with Olympic medalists

Havana - Domadores de Cuba (Tamers of Cuba) will open the 7th World Series of Boxing next Friday facing Venezuela''s Caciques (Chiefmen) at Havana Sports City with three Olympic medalists from Rio de Janeiro 2016.

The 75 kilogram Olympic Champion Arlen López and bronze medalists Joahnys Argilagos (49 kg) and Erislandy Savón (91 kg) were chosen by head coach Rolando Acebal for Cuba's first presentation in the important event.

The other two fighters for the opening day are junior world champion Javier Ibáñez (56 kg) and the Pan-American Champion Andy Cruz (64 kg). Cuba is the defending champion.

López, Argilagos and Savón have a record altogether of 51 fights in previous editions of this international contest by teams, with balance of 14-3, 10-3 and 21-0, respectively.

Talented Ibáñez, gold in Sofia 2014, won two matches in the fourth and sixth versions, and Cruz, the Toronto 2015 champion, has a balance of 5-1.

The Venezuelan Chiefmen are coming to Havana with Yoelvis Hernández (64 kg), who has a defeat in the World Series; Jefferson Jose Blanco (49 kg), Yoni Blanco (56 kg), Keiber González (75 kg) and Ronald González (91 kg). None of whom has an outstanding performance.

The beginning of Pool A of the 7th World Series of Boxing will have in addition the dual meet between Condors of Argentina and Colombia, also on Friday, and in Pool C Saturday, Russia and Astaná Arlans from Kazakhstan, and China Dragons against the Tigers of Uzbekistan.

Group B will start with fights between the members of Italy Thunder and the British Lions, on February 9 and Atlas Lions of Morocco and France will be fighting on the 10th.

The following presentation of the Cuban fighters will be a week later, also at home, against the Condors of Argentina, with fights in 52 kg, 60 kg, 69 kg, 81 kg and + 91 kg.
