Cuban Vice President Attend Act for Heroes' Day in Mozambique

Maputo - Vice President of the Cuban Council of State, Salvador Valdes Mesa, has participated today on an invitation by Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi, at the official ceremony for Heroes'' Day.

The Mozambican leader placed a wreath in front of the star-shaped crypt in the middle of an immense plaza at 09:00 local time, where the remains of some of the best heroes of this African land are resting.

After this moment, the parade began towards the interior of the enclosure, where there are several white niches. The most important ones are those who have the names of Eduardo Mondlane and Samora Machel.

The site, which remains naturally illuminated, received the honors by Valdes Mesa, the only foreign guest, as well as all political and social figures of the country, and the diplomatic staff accredited in Maputo.

Later, Nyusi made his speech on occasion of the anniversary, in which he sent a message of peace and reconciliation to the people of Mozambique.

February 3rd, national holiday, was established here to remind those fallen in the struggles for the liberation until the ties of the Portuguese colonial yoke were broken and independence was achieved on June 25th, 1975.

Mondlane, founder of the Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo) in 1962, was assassinated on February 3rd, 1969, and Machel, the country's first president after his independence, was killed on October 19th, 1986 in a plane crash under circumstances that are not yet clarified.

At the end of the event, the Cuban vice president visited the headquarters of Frelimo, where he had a friendly and warm meeting with the secretary general of the organization, Joaquim Machava.

Valdes Mesa is in Maputo on his last stage of an official tour of three African countries, which began on January 26th in Ethiopia.

He participated in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, representing his country, in the 28th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.

The second stop of his trip was in South Africa, where strong ties of friendship with the government and members of the triple alliance, as well as the excellent level of bilateral and multilateral cooperation were ratified.
