Culiacan, Mexico - Cuban right-handed Lázaro Blanco was picked up the Best Starter of the 2017 Caribbean Baseball Series, that the Puerto Rican Caguas Creoles won by beating Mexically Eagles, of Mexico, 1-0 in a sensational final game.

The Series Most Valuable Player and Best Third Base was Puerto Rican David Vidal, while American Jake Sanchez, of the Mexically Eagles, was chosen the Best Relief Pitcher.

Another two players of the Granma Chestnuts, the Cuban champion team that represented the island in the Series, were also included in the All Star Team, William Saavedra as Best First Base and Carlos Benitez as Best Second Base.

All teams, except the Dominican Licey Tigers, included players in the ideal nine.

The Best Catcher was Mexican Sebastian Valle; Freddy Galvis, of Venezuela's Zulia Eagles, was the Best Short Stop, and the three best outfielders were Jason Bourgeois (LF) , Chris Robertson (CF) and Ronnie Mustelier (RF), all of them played for the Mexically Eagles.

For the Caguas Creoles it was their first championship in 30 years, and a Puerto Rican team had not won the Series since 2000. Next year's Caribbean Baseball Series will take place in Barquisimetro, Venezuela.

Though Caribbean baseball leaders want Cuba to become full member of the regional Confederation, the island's champion teams will have to continue playing as invited nation till the US lifts political hurdles.

The Cuban League was separated from the Caribbean Confederation in 1960, right after the triumph of the Revolution, on Washington's and Major League Baseball's pressure.
