Accomplishments of the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC) this year, under the banner of "56 Years Conquering the Future," include 59,400 young women joining the organization; more consistent activity in local branches; as well as work in community centers focused on support to women and families.

Granma province was recognized for its vanguard role and selected as the site of this year's national celebration of International Women's Day, March 8, according to the FMC National Secretariat.

The provinces of Ciego de Ávila, Sancti Spíritus, Matanzas, and the Isle of Youth Special Municipality were also honored for their outstanding work, while the FMC in Guantánamo was recognized for its efforts supporting the region's recovery following Hurricane Matthew.

The provinces recognized have outstanding participation of women in all sectors of the economy; in supporting the Public Health system's maternal-infant program; community activities; as well as preventative and supportive social work.

Nonetheless, the FMC Secretariat noted the challenges facing the Federation in its work encouraging the creative, transformative contribution of women to the country's economic, political and social development, while reiterating the organization's commitment to the legacy of the Revolution's heroes and heroines, and to Fidel and Raúl.
