Damascus -The terrorists in the Islamic State, Daesh, an Arabic language acronym, have abandoned historic city of Palmyra after fierce fighting with the Syrian army and allied militias, military sources confirmed today.
According to a last-minute's report, Daesh's troops mined some areas of the locality and in the cleanliness of which the Syrian and Russian sappers are currently working.
On a broad front and in two directions from the north and south, military and militia units of the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah and the Iraqi forces of the Fatimids advanced effectively, the sources said.
This time, the flanks of the offensive were guaranteed and effectively prevented or neutralized, especially, suicide car attacks, a common method of the Daesh terrorists, they stated.
Among the areas that have been taken up are the Khama chain, the road linking Wadi Abyad and Palmyra and other geographical points that surround the strategic gas field of Al Maher, the two sides stressed.
The ground offensive was supported by Syria and Russian aviation, as well as the use for the first time of the TOS 1 A incendiary rockets, modernized BM 21 shuttles from 80 rocket fire at a time, and MI-28 attack helicopters. Palmyra, whose ancient citadel is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has great destructions, had been reoccupied by the Daesh in December 2016.
