Rome - G-7 Foreign Ministers begin today their two-day annual meeting in the Italian city of Lucca with an agenda focused on confronting terrorism and eradicating the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
The meeting chaired by the Italian Foreign Minister, Angelino Alfano, was also attended by the foreign ministers of Germany, Gabriel Sigmar; France, Jean-Marc Ayrault; United Kingdom, Boris Johnson; Canada, Chrystia Freeland; and Japan, Fumio Kishida.
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Federica Mogherini also attended the meeting.
According to a statement from the Italian Foreign Ministry, which will host the meeting as the country's rotating president, the agenda will also include the situation in Syria, Libya, Ukraine, Iran, Africa, the Mediterranean and around the Republic Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
The war against Syria will be one of the focal points, especially after the United States attack on Al Shayrat air base, in violation of the most elementary norms of rationality and international law, but backed by its European allies.
The Syrian issue will be also addressed at a special meeting convened for tomorrow by Alfano, apart from the ministerial meeting with his counterparts from Germany, France, Britain, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Jordan.
The purpose of this consultation, according to the main media of this country, is to undertake initiatives that prevent a military escalation in the conflict, after the American bombing.
Ministers - according to the document - will support the actions of the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, aimed at strengthening the effectiveness of peacekeeping forces, conflict prevention, and mediation, as well as giving the organization the capacity to cope the current threats and challenges to peace and security.
According to the program, the ministers will arrive at the Ducal Palace at 16:00 (local time) where they will have the first working session, until 16:45 when they will start a tour of the historic center of the city and at 20:00 they will dine at Orsetti Palace.
G-7 is usually described as the group of most industrialized countries on the planet, which share common interests and objectives and control more than 60 percent of global wealth.
However, in practical terms, it constitutes a space for agreement among the six major powers of NATO, in addition to the most important ally of the United States in the Asia-Pacific region, as described just a few days ago by the Italian newspaper Il Manifesto.
