The Chemical Incident Was Made Up, Syrian Presidential Adviser Says

Damascus -The incident with chemical weapons in Idleb was ''made up,'' Syria''s presidential advisor Bouzeina Shabaan said in an interview with Al Mayadeen channel published today in Damascus.

'We are free of such weapons,' she said; and reaffirmed that 'Syria expects the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to arrive in the country to start relevant investigations.'

Shabaan added that both Russia and Syria are convinced that neither the United States nor the OPCW will set up a committee of inquiry to clarify the causes of the incident in Khan Shaikhun since the use of chemical weapons in this area 'was a scene.'

As for the impact of that incident, the adviser said that the recent US attack on Sheyrat's Syrian airbase in the province of Homs had a political rather than a military purpose, insisting that Syria will respond to this 'aggression' in the appropriate time.

Referring to that type of action, the adviser indicated that 'Damascus understood from the Russian friends that the aggression of United States will not repeat itself again.'

Regarding the process of reconciliation in this nation of the Levant, Shabaan stressed that such a program is 'the best and safest route to restoring peace in Syria.'

'We have not fought all this war and we have offered so many sacrifices so that in the end the United States decides what it wants in Syria,' she said; and added that her country will accept no less than independence and unity and territorial integrity.

In that sense, she reiterated that 'we do not accept at all to speak of any kind of government or transitional authority' and denounced the role of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey in supporting the Muslim Brotherhood in an attempt to destroy secular states.

'Despite the media war in the West, the Syrian national army is determined to continue its fight against terrorism until it releases the last handful of land in the country,' she said.
