Ciego de Avila, Cuba - Electrification with photovoltaic solar panels to isolated homes is today a strategy of the Cuban State to benefit families living in places with difficult access.

About 167 homes have been favored with this technology in the central province of Ciego de Avila, about 430 kilometers from Havana. The aim is to raise the standard of living of people in places where to bring the network of the National Electric Power System is impossible.

Marialina Herrera, an investment specialist at the electricity company in this territory, stated that another 364 houses in remote rural settlements will be energized during the second stage of the program in the province.

The use of solar energy is a clean way to produce electricity with great positive impact on the environment, as well as being a cheaper method.

The use of photovoltaic energy in Cuba has been spread to isolated communities for the lighting of rural schools, health centers and television rooms, mainly in the mountainous areas of the east and central regions of the island.

The country has been working for several years to promote the use of renewable energy sources, mainly the use of biogas, wind energy, hydropower, biomass, solar and others.
