Paris- Cuba defended at the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) the leading role of that United Nations agency in the promotion of world peace, diplomatic sources reported today.

In the session 201 of the Executive Council, Cuban Ambassador Dulce Buergo reaffirmed her country's commitment and political will to the UNESCO Inter-disciplinary mandate, which he said to be of special importance in the world.

According to a communique, the diplomatic representative highlighted the importance of education for peace and development, social and natural sciences, technology and innovation, culture as driving force of development, and information and communication technologies.

Buergo described as important all those pillars, 'through which solidarity and social justice will be fostered,' because they are 'essential in the formation of future generations.'

The ambassador paid tribute to the historic leader of the Cuban revolution, Fidel Castro, who died on November 25, 2016. In this reference, the ambassador recalled an excerpt of the speech Fidel Castro gave in 1995, during his visit to UNESCO, when he asserted: 'Who resists, sooner or later wins if his/her cause is fair. Those who do not defend fair causes cannot last much time.'
