Well-Preserved Books and Magazines

On many occasions, we observe that there are many books and magazines which are victims of the mildew and funguses due to our lack of care. The damp is the first condition for them to grow and developed and spread, along with the subsequent affectations not only for these materials but also for the human health, especially in those ones who are allergic or asthmatics.
The related recommendations include keeping the books in a shelf, if possible, where there was an air flow and never inside closets, basements or outdoor.
If possible, use the fans in the hottest days and in spite of the exposure to the sun´s ultraviolet rays can help to kill the mildew´s spores, do not to place them under a long exposure not to damage them and the bleaching of their paper that could get fragile.
Although there are many magazines of design where the combinations of books and indoor plants look beautiful, this is not really recommended for a library. However, if you insist on this, then try to keep the plants distant from the shelves.
Likewise, clean the upper part of your books and magazines every now and then, remember that a clean surface seems to be less attractive for the spores. Moreover, if you saw a growing on the cover of your books, use a thing piece of paper or a very soft handkerchief to brush the mildew, gently.
Cover your mouth when you carry out this operation, besides, you can clean them with denatured alcohol and the works with bindings made of woolen cloth, leather or other kind of hard cover. However, do your test in a non-visible corner to check any color or deterioration.
Once it is eliminated the mildew and the funguses of books and magazines, you might remove the damp smell if you sprinkle sodium bicarbonate into an airtight container or a plastic back and placing the book inside it for a couple of hours. Repeat this operation, if necessary.
