Cuban Capital to Host International Festival Danzón Habana 2017

Havana - The International Festival Danzón Habana 2017 will be held from June 21 to 25 in this capital, where participants will pay homage to the musician and composer Dámaso Pérez Prado on the centenary of his birth, local media informed today.

The event will include competitions, workshops, theoretical meetings, among other activities, and will be dedicated to the Mexican states of Yucatan, Veracruz, Campeche and Quintana Roo and the Cuban territories of Madruga, San Antonio de Los Baños and Santa Cruz Del Norte.

Under the motto ˜From danzón to mambo to chachacha,' it will remember important figures of the national culture like Aniceto Diaz (1887-1964), creator of Danzonete, and singer Paulina Álvarez (1912-1965).

According to José Loyola, from the organizing committee, the Caribbean Association of Cuba, Variedades América Theater, Mella Theater and nightclubs of the capital and other nearby provinces are among the venues of the festival.

In addition, the Hispano-American Culture Center will host the Danzón International Colloquium, which will focus on the presence of this genre in this country and Mexico, as well as its role in shaping and defending national identity.

The participation of groups of the region is expected, who will enliven the nights of the event.
