Cubans pay tribute to hero Antonio Maceo

A well-deserved tribute today will receive Major General Antonio Maceo, on the 172nd anniversary of his birth in this city, in busts and monuments that perpetuate the memory of the fighter of the nineteenth century wars.
Likewise, there will be activities in the Center of Studies that bears name and the Casa Natal Museum, National Monument, where a political-cultural gala will be held in the afternoon, with the presentation of the Municipal Concert Band, poets, singers and others.
Yanay Cos, programmer of the institution, told Cuban News Agency that six decades ago, precisely on June 14, 1957, Municipal Concert Band performed there in an act during which three pieces of art of great value, dedicated to the Bronze Titan, as Maceo was known, were donated.
They were, she said, Protesta de Baraguá, by Antonio Ferrer Cabello, Desembarco de Maceo by Duaba, by Miguel Ángel Botalín, the latter two preserved in their funds, and Muerte by Antonio Maceo, authored by a female surnamed Riquenes.
As sample of the month a photocopy of the register of the first baptism of Antonio Maceo, held in the church of Santo Tomás, was chosen.
The valiant general of the Liberating Army was born in the old Providencia Street, today Maceo 207, where the museum opens to tell of the patriot, his actions and thought, along with photographs, belongings of the Maceo Grajales family and others objects.
