World Peace Council Denounces US Interference on Cuba

Havana - The World Peace Council has denounced today the aggressive policy of the new U.S. administration against Cuba, which resorts to threats and blackmail to try to reverse the revolutionary process on the island.

Through a letter, posted on the website of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with Peoples (ICAP), that organization reiterates the demand to end the U.S. interference, 'which constantly seeks to disrupt the progress of the Cuban revolution and isolate the nation through a criminal blockade imposed more than five decades ago.'

The document emphasized that the speech given by President, Donald Trump, on June 16 in the city of Miami, in which he announced a change in the White House policy with respect to Cuba, is a setback in the process towards the normalization of relations started by both countries in 2014.

For this reason, the council completely rejects the statements made by the president of the United States, 'typical of a failed and retrograde policy of unfounded and hypocritical accusations against the Cuban democracy.'

It also contrasts Washington's aggression in its relations with Latin America with the role played by Cuba in favor of the regional and world peace, while urging to strengthen the defense of the right of the nations to their self-determination and sovereignty 'facing the indications that internal destabilization policies will be intensified.'

The document, signed by the president of the Council, Brazilian Socorro Gomes, expresses the firm solidarity with the institutions that have spoken out against Trump's policy, such as the ICAP, the Cuban Movement for Peace and Peoples' Sovereignty, and the Organization of Solidarity with the Peoples of Africa, Asia and Latin America.

The World Peace Council, founded in 1950, is an international organization registered in the United Nations that advocates for universal disarmament, sovereignty, independence, peaceful coexistence, anti-imperialism, and the fight against weapons of mass destruction and all forms of discrimination.
