For the rescue of cultural traditions

San Antonio de los Baños is a city with a rich cultural tradition. Traditions are values, beliefs, customs and forms of artistic expression characteristic of a community, especially those transmitted orally.

Numerous traditional festivals took place in the municipality. Among them were the Verbenas, where car parades with beautiful girls representing the Cuban woman were performed; the Carnival, with numerous comparsas; the Peasant Festivals, concentrated in the rural districts of the town and Popular Festivals organized by some families at Christmas and on the anniversary of the Patron of the Village. In addition, the Dance of the Flowers in May and the Dance of the Guayaberas in August.

Regarding humor, we find important traditions due to the natural and bright grace of our inhabitants. The satirical publication El Papalote began the humorous tradition of the town. Every year the International Biennial of Humor, created on March 17, 1979, is held in San Antonio de los Baños.

But it is urgent these musical, theatrical, humorous, carnival, literary and other traditions are reactivated again. The organization and creativity, associated with the talent of our artists, can rescue that culture so necessary for any people.

Many of these traditions have been lost or simply those responsible for organizing them are no longer among us. Therefore, it is advisable to try to save those that are closer to the present life of the Ariguanabenses, as long as they include competitions, samples, exhibitions and other varieties that motivate the people, beyond fairs where objects and gifts are sold.
