Young women: protagonists in ariguanabense society

In San Antonio de los Baños young women play a fundamental role due to their participation in different spheres of life. They are protagonists in several sectors: education, health, anti-vectorial campaign, sports, art, science, agriculture, among others.

One of these young women is the artisan Yenisleidis Alfaro Gácita, who offered us this interview.

When did you start in the world of crafts?

I started about 4 years ago in the Amateurs Group of the Municipal Culture House.

Why the world of crafts?

I love creating household items and that have personal value.

What materials do you work with?

I work with a rubbery material called foamy, but I also use cement and cold ceramics. I also use wood, fabrics, seeds, crystals, bottles and plastic.

What kind of objects do you create frequently?

Useful objects for the home. For example lamps, ornaments, key chains, earrings, necklaces, hair accessories and candles.
How do you make your creations?

The creations are done manually, using the heat in some materials to give the shape to what I am going to make.
What does this work mean for you?

I love to create, when I do an object I fall in love with it; knowing that it will be useful, pleases me.
Have you exhibited your creations? Tell me about it.
I participated in two exhibitions (2015) (2016). In September I participated in the Nora Lloró Traditions Hall, sponsored by the Culture House.

What aspirations do you have for the future?

I would like my craft creations to be known outside the village, I would also like to exhibit more rigorously, participate in different events to be known as an artist and to belong to the Cuban Artisan and Artists Association.
